Why a new list and why a new journal? In our short tour around the scientific publication world, we have seen that open access to research on verbal behavior findings has been officially acknowledged but that the existing lists and journals on the subject appear to be limited in the areas addressed. Also, it appears that access to t his information appears at best limited. In addition, scholarly publications seem to be dictated by applied concerns instead of answering broader questions, such as how do behavior analysts account for grammar, syntax, pragmatics, etc. We seek for this list to address those questions. But the traditional organization of scholarly publication runs against the objective of allowing easy world access. Thanks to recent academic initiatives- many of which started with our small humble group at BAO, new models of scientific publication have emerged that offer direct open access to journals. They have gained support from various research agencies. This "gold" model for journals should be explored in every discipline, particularly in behavior analysis, where large amounts of money are used to support non-optimal publication. Indeed, a movement is a foot in larger scientific communities that strongly believes that if the research receives government funding its results should be accessible by the populace without additional charge.
This list and journal represent a first step to a more intensive academic discussion around issue of verbal behavior including relational frames and the development of nontraditional areas of behavior analysis such as the development of grammar and syntax. This is not a practitioner oriented list, nor is it a parent list. BAO runs those types of lists; however, this list is purely for professionals conducting research. The list is for academics and researchers who wish to discuss issues of dissertations, thesis’s, grant writing, and to build a body of research answering important research questions.
This list is:
1. This is an academic list. Parents and service providers should find a suitable list on the BAO Community at http://www.baocommunity.org/mailman/listinfo if you do not find a list that meets your needs suggest that a list be started by emailing the BAO Community List Mail Administrator pritchard@baocommunity.org
2. This list is purely for academic and research discussion. It is not meant to be a list to post parent issues, workshop announcements, CE announcements, or anything not related to the discussion of language, grammar, and syntax from a behavioral perspective. From time to time off topic discussion is allowed, but blatant disregard for this rule will result in consequences(4).
3. We encourage healthy debate and academic discourse, we DO NOT ALLOW NAME CALLING AND FLAMING.
4. The list moderators will remove anyone who blatantly breaks these rules and ban them from future membership.
